Travelers wanting to travel to Peru this summer, will be pleased to hear the railway heading to Machu Picchu should be fully repaired by June 25. Earlier this year, extreme flooding from torrential rain caused severe damage on the railway leading to the historic site, causing some train services to close for several months. The ruins themselves were not damaged by the floods but were inaccessible by tourists as there is no direct road access. The capital of the Inca Empire and UNESCO World Heritage Site is open for visitors and this summer is a great time to visit Peru and the ancient city in the sky.

In addition to the railway restoration, trains to Machu Picchu have also been renovated. Starting July 1st, the popular Vistadome and Expedition service carriages now have many new improvements such as amazing panoramic windows, allowing guests to take in all the vistas and incredible views leading up to the ruins. New upholstered seating and state of the art sound equipment make the train ride leisurely, comfortable and enjoyable.

No visit to Peru is complete without a visit to Machu Picchu. Please visit our Machu Picchu Tours page for more information.

Last week the Machu Picchu area of Peru was hit by intense rainstorms, which caused severe flooding of the Urubamba River and damage to the train tracks.

We wanted to keep everyone updated on the situation for future travels to the area. As of now, the rain has stopped and the river has returned to its banks. Machu Picchu is undamaged, and the road to the citadel is passable. Although the train tracks are still damaged, the government will have trains to and from the town of Machu Picchu (formerly Aguas Calientes) running by the end of March, at the latest. In the meantime, there are other methods of reaching the ruins for those interested in traveling in February and March.

Travelers after March should not experience any issues, particularly since the rainy season ends in late April.

This new 10-day Peru travel itinerary is ideal for families with kids of all ages, with a mixture of more active adventures and visits to area highlights to keep everyone entertained. From horseback riding to river rafting, weaving lessons and hiking part of the Inca Trail, it’s an exciting vacation adventure itinerary that won’t leave any time for boredom.

Begin your vacation in Lima, Peru’s capital and a coastal city with a great deal of history. You’ll stay in the Miraflores neighborhood, home to dining and shopping options, and have the chance to visit the historic colonial center of town, and the amazing Museo Larco – visitors have access to the enormous pottery archive, a very unusual experience.

Then, continue to Cusco, where you’ll stay several nights in the Sacred Valley. At a lower altitude than Cusco, the Sacred Valley is filled with ruins, villages and colorful markets, as well as the chance for activities like horseback riding on Peruvian Paso horses, learning traditional weaving techniques, river rafting and mountain biking.

After a few days in the Sacred Valley, take the panoramic Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, disembarking early for the one day Inca Trail hike. Explore the Machu Picchu citadel, and stay overnight at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, which has nature walks in the cloud forest and to a spectacle bear reserve.

End the trip in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, where you’ll have a chance to explore the famed Temple of the Sun and enormous ruins outside the city.

This is an ideal trip to combine with a cruise in the Galapagos Islands, or time in the Amazon. Ask us for more details!

We are excited to introduce this new itinerary that combines the legendary Machu Picchu with the natural wonders of the rich Peruvian Amazon region. This 11-day Peru combo tour itinerary begins in Lima, where you’ll have a chance to explore artwork from ancient cultures, as well as the impressive colonial sites, and sample the renowned Peruvian cuisine.

Continue to Cusco, former Inca capital, and the Sacred Valley, to explore ruins, villages and markets. Of course, the highlight of your time in the area will be Machu Picchu, the impressive ruins set in the cloud forest, whose purpose is still not completely clear to archaeologists. You’ll begin your time exploring the Inca culture in the Sacred Valley, at a lower altitude for easier acclimatization and home to charming villages, terraced ruins overlooking the valley and colorful markets.

Then, continue to Machu Picchu in the panoramic Vistadome or the luxury Hiram Bingham service, where you’ll have a private guide to learn more about the impressive architecture and construction techniques. Finally, stay a few nights in Cusco, which has a combination of colonial and Inca architecture, a lovely main plaza, and the famed Temple of the Sun. Cusco is a lively town, with restaurants, bars and plenty of winding alleys to explore.

End your trip in the Amazon region, with a stay at one of the lodges set deep into the jungle there, or with a riverboat cruise on a luxury riverboat. Lodges range from those offering more amenities, to those for travelers interested in an authentic, in-depth Amazon experience. You’ll have activities in the Amazon like wildlife watching, canoeing, fishing for piranha, visiting local communities, night walks and more.

Ask us for more details on adding more destinations in Peru to your trip, or about other Amazon regions in South America.
